Frequently Asked Questions

What is SoftWave Therapy and how does it work?

SoftWave Therapy (also known as SoftWave TRT) is a cutting-edge, non-invasive treatment that uses unfocused extracorporeal shockwave technology to stimulate the body's natural healing processes. It works by delivering low-intensity acoustic waves (sound waves) to injured or painful tissue, which triggers a biological response at the cellular level.

These acoustic waves help to:

  • Reduce pain and inflammation by disrupting pain signals and decreasing inflammatory markers
  • Improve blood flow by stimulating the formation of new blood vessels (angiogenesis)
  • Activate stem cells in the treated area to promote tissue regeneration and repair
  • Break down scar tissue and calcifications that may be contributing to pain and restricted movement

SoftWave is unique because it uses a patented electrohydraulic, parabolic reflector applicator that delivers a broad treatment zone — covering more tissue per session than traditional focused shockwave devices. Each session typically lasts 10–15 minutes and most patients notice improvement within 3–6 sessions.

What conditions can SoftWave Therapy treat?

SoftWave Therapy is effective for a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions, including:

  • Chronic and acute back and neck pain
  • Rotator cuff injuries and shoulder pain
  • Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) and golfer's elbow
  • Plantar fasciitis and heel pain
  • Knee pain including osteoarthritis and patellar tendinopathy
  • Hip pain and bursitis
  • Sports injuries and soft tissue damage
  • Neuropathy and nerve-related pain
  • Post-surgical recovery and scar tissue management

SoftWave is exclusive to WRC in the Vaughan area, making us one of the only clinics in the region offering this advanced regenerative therapy.

What should I expect at a chiropractic initial assessment?

Your first chiropractic appointment is a comprehensive evaluation designed to understand your condition and develop a personalized treatment plan. Here is what to expect:

Health History Review (10–15 minutes): Your chiropractor will ask about your current complaint, how and when it started, what makes it better or worse, your medical history, medications, and previous injuries or treatments.

Physical Examination (15–20 minutes): This includes assessing your posture and gait, range of motion testing of the affected joints and spine, orthopedic and neurological tests to identify the source of your pain, muscle strength and flexibility assessment, and palpation (hands-on examination) of your spine and soft tissues.

Diagnosis and Treatment Discussion: Your chiropractor will explain their findings, provide a diagnosis, and outline a recommended treatment plan — including the number of visits, techniques to be used, and expected outcomes.

First Treatment (if appropriate): In many cases, gentle treatment may begin during your initial visit. This could include spinal adjustments, soft tissue therapy, or other techniques.

Please wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing and bring any relevant imaging (X-rays, MRI reports) if available. Initial assessments typically last 45–60 minutes.

What does a physiotherapy initial assessment involve?

Your first physiotherapy appointment is an in-depth assessment to identify the root cause of your condition and create a tailored rehabilitation plan. Here is what you can expect:

Subjective Assessment: Your physiotherapist will discuss your symptoms, medical history, lifestyle, work demands, and your personal goals for recovery.

Objective Assessment: This involves movement analysis, joint range of motion measurements, muscle strength testing, neurological screening (reflexes, sensation), and special orthopaedic tests specific to your condition.

Goal Setting and Treatment Planning: Together, you and your physiotherapist will establish realistic recovery goals and a treatment timeline. You will receive a clear explanation of your diagnosis and what the treatment plan involves.

Initial Treatment: Your first treatment may include manual therapy (joint mobilization or manipulation), therapeutic exercises, electrotherapy (ultrasound, TENS, IFC), or acupuncture.

Initial physiotherapy assessments typically last 60 minutes. Please arrive 10 minutes early to complete intake paperwork, and wear or bring comfortable clothing that allows access to the area being treated.

What is the difference between chiropractic and physiotherapy?

Both chiropractic and physiotherapy are effective hands-on rehabilitation therapies, but they have different primary focuses:

Chiropractic care focuses primarily on the diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders, with particular emphasis on the spine and nervous system. Chiropractors are trained to perform spinal adjustments (manipulation) to restore proper alignment, relieve nerve pressure, and improve joint function. Chiropractic care is commonly sought for back pain, neck pain, headaches, and joint disorders.

Physiotherapy takes a broader approach to movement rehabilitation, addressing the full spectrum of physical function. Physiotherapists use exercise therapy, manual therapy, electrotherapy, acupuncture, and education to restore strength, mobility, and function after injury, surgery, or illness. Physiotherapy is effective for sports injuries, post-surgical recovery, chronic pain, neurological conditions, and more.

At WRC, our chiropractors and physiotherapists often work together to provide integrated, comprehensive care tailored to your specific needs.

Do I need a referral to book an appointment?

No referral is required to see a chiropractor or physiotherapist at WRC. You can contact us directly to schedule your appointment.

However, some extended health insurance plans may require a physician's referral for reimbursement. We recommend checking with your insurance provider before your first visit to understand your coverage. Our administrative team is also happy to help answer any billing or insurance questions.

Is parking available at the clinic?

Yes, free parking is available on-site at Woodbridge Rehabilitation Centre. We are conveniently located in Woodbridge (Vaughan), Ontario, with easy access and ample parking for all patients. If you have any difficulty finding us, please do not hesitate to call our office and we will be happy to assist.

Is chiropractic or physiotherapy covered by OHIP or insurance?

Chiropractic and physiotherapy services are not covered by OHIP (Ontario Health Insurance Plan) for most patients. However, many extended health benefits plans — including those through employers, unions, and private insurers — provide coverage for these services.

We direct bill to most major insurance providers, making the process as simple as possible for you. Please bring your insurance card and policy information to your first appointment. Motor vehicle accident (MVA) and WSIB (Workplace Safety and Insurance Board) claims are also accepted and handled directly by our team.
